BACKED BY SCIENCE:


- 2020 study published in the Journal of Consumer Research found that motivational mantras on clothing increased perseverance. Those wearing t-shirts or bracelets with short motivational statements persisted for longer periods and invested more effort, especially when the tasks became harder and fatigue set in. (Garcia-Rada et al., 2020)


 Fitness Goals:

- 2014 study in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise found that motivational self-talk improved endurance performance. Participants who used positive self-talk phrases during exercise were able to continue physical tasks for longer before reaching exhaustion, compared to a control group. The mantras helped reinforce mental toughness and resilience. (Blanchfield et al., 2014)

- 2020 study published in Frontiers in Psychology concluded motivational self-talk produced significant improvements in weight training endurance and self-efficacy. (Cuevas et al., 2020, p.11)

Athletic Goals:

- 2021 study in Frontiers in Psychology found university athletes performed better under pressure if they repeated a mantra like “I am prepared” before competitions. The mantras boosted self-efficacy and skills execution. (Latinjak et al., 2021)


- 2022 literature review in Frontiers in Sports Psychology concluded that mantra training shows promise for boosting performance in athletes by sharpening attentional focus, promoting flow states, and cultivating perseverance and resilience. (Latinjak et al., 2022)


Weight Loss Goals:

- 2021 study in the Journal of American College Health found participants assigned to repeat a short self-affirmation mantra daily for 8 weeks lost significantly more weight than the control group. (Cooper et al., 2021, p.769-776)


- The Importance of Affirmations During Weight Loss discusses how affirmations can boost mental health and resilience, essential for weight loss effectiveness. It cites a 2015 study that showed affirmations increased feelings of competency and resilience. LeMoine, D. (2022, October 13)


Academic Goals:

- 2013 study from the University of California - Santa Barbara demonstrated that mindfulness training, which can include mantra recitation, can significantly reduce mind-wandering and improve working memory and reading comprehension among university students. - 2014 review in JAMA Internal Medicine concluded mantra meditation can reduce academic stress and test anxiety while improving student performance, especially when mantras reinforce positive self-perceptions. (JAMA Internal Medicine, 174(3), 357-368)
